We at IITD are committed towards providing world-class academic environment and infrastructure to faculty and students. As institutions of national importance and academic excellence we have been exclusively dependent on the Government of India for financial support. However, given the current demands of enlarging the scope and level of our educational outreach and research capabilities, we strive towards forging a partnership with our extended family -- our Alumni.
We hope all of you will join us in our endeavor to improve academic and laboratory facilities, upgrade existing infrastructure, improve existing extra-circular amenities, and last but not the least procure sponsorship for meritorious needy students. Our aim is to sustain academic excellence and to do this we seek your support in strengthening industry linkages and securing financial investments in the future generations of our IITians.
Currently, we are fund-raising and campaigning to elicit your generous support for the following programs:
Increasing the Number of Excellence Awards for our Students
Awards/Medals/Prizes are presented to students excelling in academics, project work, leadership qualities, all-round performance, extracurricular activities, sports etc. IIT Delhi welcomes support of its Alumni in increasing the number of such awards through a financial endowment. The interest accrued through such endowment funds will support such awards and prizes.
Increasing the Number of Student Scholarships
The number of students at IIT Delhi would grow from 5,000 to 7,500 in the next five years. The tuition fee has gone up to Rs. 15,000+ per semester. More number of students are likely to need financial support. IIT Delhi welcomes financial bequests to provide scholarships to the needy and deserving students. Scholarships are awarded to students on merit-cum-means basis or on merit basis to those excelling in academic, project work, leadership qualities, all-round performance, extra curricular activities, sports etc. The interest accrued from such endowment funds will support future generations of meritorious students.
Corpus Fund for Extending Conference Support to Doctoral Researchers
IIT Delhi is striving to significantly enhance its research potential by improving quality and the number of PhD students. Our target is to increase student enrolment into the PhD program from current strength of 900 scholars to more than 1500 doctoral candidates in the next 5 years. An important initiative in this regard is to fund student travel to international conferences and give them exposure to peers and opportunities for industry feedback. To achieve this we aim to create a corpus of Rs. 10 Crores (or US$ 2.5 million) in the next 5 years to ensure that each PhD student has an opportunity for at least one international conference.
Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowships
Several factors motivate and influence decisions of young academics, scientists, and engineers to pursue a career in research and teaching. Working in the industry yourself, you are perfectly aware of the wide disparity in salaries and emoluments received by faculty as compared to coevals employed in industry whether in India or abroad. This gap ranges from 4x in most cases to nearly 10x in some disciplines, and continues to increase.
IIT Delhi has about 450 faculty which needs to grow to 750 in next five years. The shortfall in next five years will be about 400. To attract and retain young faculty, IIT Delhi has instituted Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowships to recognize and award young outstanding faculty in all disciplines of Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and Management. Such an award takes the form of an honorarium of Rs. 10,000 per month to be paid to an incumbent for three to five years over and above their salaries.
You can help us in increasing the number of these fellowships in any discipline of Science, Engineering, Social Sciences or Management with a one-time donation. Similarly, corporate entities may help establish such fellowships. Each fellowship entails a donation of Rs. 600,000 (provides an honorarium of Rs. 10,000 per month over 5 years).
Chairs for Distinguished Faculty
We welcome Alumni support to establish more Chairs for our distinguished faculty. The faculty appointed against the Chair gets annual research grants of Rs. 2 Lakhs to 6 Lakhs. In addition to the salary, the incumbent, at his/ her option may also draw an honorarium of Rs. 10,000/- per month. The endowment required for a Chair ranges from Rs. 30 to 80 Lakhs. We have 34 endowed Chairs at IIT Delhi. Alumni have helped us in setting up of 11 such Chairs. We need to have at least 100 such Chairs.
Distinguished Visitor Programme
The objective is to create a mechanism for engaging with distinguished alumni and other researchers in universities/research laboratories abroad and involve them in teaching and interactions with faculty and students. Such visits would strengthen the research work of groups/areas involved, create opportunities for collaborative research, and create career opportunities for graduating research students and increase visibility of IIT Delhi.
Donations from alumni and industry are sought for distinguished visitor programme. Initially we target 20 such visitors in an academic year. Each visitor is expected to spend a period of one to two weeks at IIT Delhi. During this period he is expected to participate in teaching ( a 1-credit course or part of a course), give at least one research seminar in the Dept/Centre and engage with faculty here with a view to develop collaborative research proposal. A budget of upto US$5000 is made available for each visitor which includes all costs including travel. Some part of it (mainly local hospitality) can be provided in kind by the Institute.
Schools/ Programmes
New Schools/Programmes in emerging areas are set up at IIT Delhi with Alumni and Industry sponsorship. These funds are utilized towards creating and securing
(a) Additional space/new building
(b) Infrastructure facilities
(c) Fellowships for postgraduate students and research scholars
(d) Faculty positions
A detailed budget outlining capital investment and recurring expenditure is carefully prepared in order to determine the investment needed to establish a new School or initiate a new academic programme. Hence, it is not possible for us to estimate the magnitude in advance, although these normally are in the range of a few millions. One of the first such Alumnus initiatives at IIT Delhi is by Sh. Vinod Khosla who in 2004 sponsored the Amarnath Khosla and Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology with a commitment of USD 5 million to fund a new building, masters and research programmes and create new faculty positions.
Currently, IITD is in the process of establishing a "School of Biological Sciences" to promote and consolidate our research and educational outreach in emergent areas of Genomic/Proteomic Biology and Biodesign. We have estimated that we need an investment of US$ 10 million to achieve this. A donor has provided us with seed funding while the remaining funds will have to be raised from the government, industry, and our alumni. We hope you will contribute and support such initiatives.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure facilities at IIT Delhi are being regularly upgraded or expanded to meet the rising requirements of its students and faculty. We welcome support from alumni for improvements in hostel infrastructure, extra-curricular facilities, laboratories, computing & networking facilities, etc. An Alumnus can make Institute level or Hostel specific or Department specific donation in this regard. The magnitude of funds required for improving or setting up these facilities are determined after a detailed budgeting exercise. There are no benchmarks for the magnitude of funds required but these are in the range of 1-10 Million Rupees.
Alumni Gift Fund
IIT Delhi has created an Alumni Gift Fund for receiving donations for designated purposes from its alumni.
